1. What Two Men and a Truck Means at SS Removals
It’s exactly what it sounds like. Two professionals turn up with a truck, load your things, drive them across, and unload. We also take apart and reassemble furniture like beds and tables, and we offer optional free wrapping. Packing help can be added if you want it.
It works well for small moves in Brisbane and nearby suburbs, both residential and commercial. You can book weekdays, weekends or after hours, and we’re open 24/7. A heads-up, though: additional charges may apply for weekend and after-hours moves, so ask for the price on your day.
Think of it as the sensible choice when the load is light and the access is easy. It’s also handy when you only need a few big items shifted, like a lounge, a bed and a fridge, without the full-house production.
2. When We Send a Bigger Crew
More people means more hands loading, more eyes on corners and more tasks happening at once. While one person wraps and carries boxes, others handle furniture and pack the truck. Nobody’s standing around waiting for the lift.
We run residential, commercial and last-minute moves with a fleet of seven trucks and vans, so we can match the truck and crew to the job. A bigger crew is usually the right call when:
- the move has to finish in a single day,
- the home is packed with furniture,
- access is difficult, or
- you’ve got a hard deadline, like a lease handover or a house sale.
If that last one is you, finishing on time can matter more than the hourly rate.
3. Us vs DIY Truck Hire vs Marketplace Movers
Let’s be fair to every option. Here’s how they compare in general terms. Check the details with any provider before you book.
| Two men and a truck (us) | Bigger crew (us) | DIY truck hire | Marketplace mover | |
| Who lifts | Two professionals | A larger professional team | You and your friends | An independent provider |
| Best for | Small, simple moves | Big loads, stairs, deadlines | Budget moves with willing helpers | Finding a quote quickly |
| Speed | Good for small loads | Fastest for big loads | Depends on your helpers | Depends on the provider |
| Your effort | Low | Lowest | High | Low to medium |
| Insurance | Transit insurance available | Transit insurance available | Check your own cover | Ask each provider |
| Watch out for | Slower on very large loads | Higher hourly rate | Injury, damage, time | Quality and cover vary |
We also hire out trucks, so we’re not against DIY. Our fleet includes a 2.5-tonne van and 4.5-, 10- and 14-tonne trucks, and our booking form lists the licence type and a minimum driver age of 25. If you’ve got strong friends and a light load, it can work. But if you value your weekend, or you’ve got a fridge, a piano or a flight of stairs, a crew pays for itself.
Marketplaces are a fair way to get a price, and plenty of providers on them do good work. Just remember that equipment, crew and insurance vary, so the checking is on you. With us, it’s one local team, one phone number, and a free quote.
So who should pick what? If you’re moving a studio and a few mates are keen, DIY truck hire can work. If you want a quote fast and are happy to vet the provider yourself, a marketplace is a decent place to start. If you want one team, one number and someone who’ll tell you honestly what size crew you need, that’s where we come in. We’d rather book you the right crew than the biggest one.
4. Which One for Your Home?
Start with the size of the home, then adjust for stairs and heavy items. This is our own rule of thumb, not an industry standard, so use it as a starting point.
| Home size | Where we’d start | Why |
| Studio or one-bedroom unit | Two men and a truck | A small load fits a van or small truck |
| Two-bedroom unit or small house | Two men and a truck, or a small crew | Depends on furniture and stairs |
| Three-bedroom house | Bigger crew | More furniture, more trips |
| Four bedrooms or more | Bigger crew | Big load, more time pressure |
| Small office | Two men and a truck, or a small crew | Depends on desks and equipment |
| Large office | Bigger crew | Needs speed and coordination |
If you’re between two options, ask us to quote both. The expected time for each is often the most useful number you’ll get.
5. Why Access Beats Box Count
Two homes with the same number of boxes can need very different crews. What matters is how hard it is to get stuff out the door.
- Queenslanders often have steep front stairs. Several flights slow a small team down fast.
- Many apartment buildings need a booking. A bigger crew uses that window well.
- If the truck can’t park near the door, every trip gets longer.
- Narrow halls. Big furniture may need turning or taking apart.
- Hills and driveways. Slopes make loading slower.
Tell us about these when you ask for a quote. A quote that ignores access is a quote that might change on the day.
Here’s a quick test before you book. Walk through your home and count the things two people would struggle to carry safely: the fridge, the wardrobes, the solid timber table, the washing machine. If that list has more than a couple of items, or any of them need to go down stairs, say so when you call. It’s the single most useful thing you can tell us.
6. Heavy Items: When More Hands Matter
Fridges, washing machines, solid timber furniture, gym gear and pianos are what turn a simple move into a team job.
The Queensland Hazardous Manual Tasks Code of Practice puts it plainly: there’s no safe weight set for all workers in all circumstances. Risk depends on factors like bulky loads that can’t be held close to the body and how long the task goes on. It treats a task as long duration if it runs more than two hours in total per shift, or more than 30 minutes continuously. And it says team handling is best for tasks done rarely, with mechanical aids like trolleys preferred.
In plain English: the right equipment and enough people matter more than raw strength. For pianos, we use dollies, blankets, ramps and straps, and we move spinet, console, studio, upright, digital and grand pianos. We don’t disassemble them, so we’d point you to a piano technician for that step.
7. Does a Bigger Crew Cost More?
Per hour, yes. In total, not always. Here’s a simple illustration. These are example numbers to show the idea, not our rates.
If a two-person team needs 8 hours, that’s 16 person-hours. If a four-person crew needs 4.5 hours, that’s 18 person-hours. Twice the people, but only a little more total labour, and you get your afternoon back.
That’s why we say don’t compare hourly rates alone. Ask for the rate, the number of people, the expected time and any minimum charge. Our rates depend on team size, truck size and distance, and quotes are free with no obligation.
We’ve found that the people who have the smoothest moves aren’t the ones with the biggest crew. They’re the ones who told us everything up front: the stairs, the lift, the fridge in the garage, the handover time. Give us the full picture and we’ll give you a quote that sticks.
8. Packing Help and Truck Hire
If you’re short on time, packing help can save you more than an extra mover. Packing is slow, and almost everyone underestimates it. We offer packing and unpacking help, and the two-person service includes optional free wrapping.
A good middle path is to pack the rooms you use least in the week before, and let us help with fragile items and last-day packing. If you only need the truck, ask about our hire options instead.
9. FAQs
How many removalists do I need for a two-bedroom unit?
For a two-bedroom unit with easy access and a modest amount of furniture, two removalists and a truck is often enough. Lots of furniture, heavy items or stairs can tip it towards a bigger crew. Call us on 0450 203 763 and we’ll recommend a crew.
Is two men and a truck cheaper than a full crew?
The hourly rate is usually lower, but the total depends on how long the job takes. A small team suits a small load, and a larger crew may finish a big move sooner. Ask for both options in writing, with the number of people and expected time.
Can two removalists move a three-bedroom house?
They can, but it will usually take longer than with a bigger crew, especially with stairs or heavy furniture. A larger crew is often the better choice for a three-bedroom home because it speeds up loading and cuts down trips. Ask us to quote both.
What does your two-person service include?
A professional two-person team with a truck loads and unloads your belongings. We also disassemble and reassemble furniture, and optional free wrapping is available. It suits small residential and commercial moves in Brisbane and nearby suburbs, and you can book weekdays, weekends or after hours.
Do you charge extra on weekends or after hours?
Additional charges may apply for weekend or after-hours moves. We’re open 24/7, so you can book those times, but ask for the price for your specific day and time so there are no surprises. A weekday is usually the cheapest way to move.
Is it cheaper to hire a truck and move myself?
It can save on labour, but it costs you time and effort, and the risk of damage or injury is yours. We hire a 2.5-tonne van and 4.5-, 10- and 14-tonne trucks, with a minimum driver age of 25. Consider your load, your helpers and the stairs.
Is my furniture insured during the move?
Transit insurance is available with SS Removals and Rentals, but confirm what it covers before you book. Ask for the limits and exclusions in writing, and check whether your own home and contents policy provides cover. Don’t assume cover is included in the quote.
